Locomotive Switching Step — FRA 49 CFR 231.30

Locomotives used in switching service are required by FRA regulation 49 CFR 231.30 to carry switching steps. Blue SteelCo manufactures bottom steps for EMD GP-series locomotives in welded steel, built to print and stocked by Class I railroads.

Fit varies by locomotive model and position. Every model is different; check fit before ordering.

Specifications

• 6″ kickplate with 5# standard grating
• 10-gauge steel frame construction (LOC2412 includes 1/8″ steel construction)
• LOC1913 dimensions: 13-1/2″ deep x 19″ wide at rear x 25-1/2″ wide at front
• Fits GP-series switching locomotives: GP38, GP39, GP40, GP50, GP60 (confirm per model and position)

Why the Step Matters

Switching crews mount and dismount moving equipment all shift. 49 CFR 231.30 sets the safety appliance requirements for locomotives in switching service, and the bottom step is the contact point that takes the wear. A bent or corroded step is a slip hazard and an FRA defect; a welded steel replacement built to the print restores compliance and footing in one swap.
