We perform a wide variety of fabrication jobs here at Blue SteelCo. My only regret about this one is that we didn’t document it well or take more photos.
A customer brought us an old, crusty locomotive bell to restore and mount. It wouldn’t need to ring—it would sit atop a granite monument bearing bronze plaques with the names of workers from the facility. The clapper was also missing, so we’d have had to fashion one from metal anyway. We had two specific goals: it needed to be shiny, and it needed to be secure. These old brass bells are hot items online!
After a trip to the polisher, the bell received a clear coat to prevent tarnishing. We built a powder-coated steel cradle that bolts through the metal frame of the monument. Under the bell-shaped finial is a locking pin that secures the bell to the frame. As you can tell from the photos, I kept the bell at my home until we delivered it. Something this shiny draws a lot of attention.

You know how it goes, every department weighs in about the workflow, tool layout and the decision is made. Toolboards and carts are fabricated and delivered, then some tool manufacturing company modifies their tool. Now what? Cutting wheel and rattle can come out and the maintenance department gets to modify all the system carts.

Challenge, new icebox has a tiny slot for refilling ice with a 5 Gallon Bucket. The result was ice on the floor resulting in a slip fall obstacle for the crew. The other challenge was bags of ice pushed in the slot and not emptied into the bin resulting in a clogged drain and then water on the floor. Either way these easy to use chutes make refilling easy.

It’s been said you have to have the right tool for the job, we may own the right tool but can’t find it when we need it. That is when tool management comes into play.
This tool case has 11 tools and the dies and mandrel must be used as a set.
You can see the “Box of tools” method of storage here.
You often find you have 2 of these, none of those, and damaged or extras of tools that don’t belong in the box.
Once we determine what is needed to complete the work we also discuss storage and location space needed.
We will print a legend to identify the tools and proper storage location. The only tools that belong in this area will have a place in the box.
