We were tasked with securing all the required tools for the job. We designed a special slide for the derailer since it is so heavy and requires a reach and lift with your back extended. Is this OSHA’s number one back strain position? It may be, but now the slide mechanism pulls it out so it is a straight arm lift position. Next came securing brake shoes, Derail Locks, MU hoses, buggy bars, and brooms.
The first truck we did was old but we completely emptied and cleaned out the bed for layout.
Almost as lovely as when it was new just a little more character.
When aligning the springs when installing a traction motor calls for some extra reach and keeping safe.

We perform a wide variety of fabrication jobs here at Blue Steel. The only regret I have about this one is that we did not document it very well and take a lot more photos.
An old crusty locomotive bell was given to us to restore and mount. There was no desire for it to ring as it would only be sitting atop a granite monument with the bronze plaques with the names of workers at this facility. In addition, the clapper was missing so we would have to fashion one from metal. We had 2 specific goals, it needed to be shiny and it needed to be secure. These old brass bells are a hot item to sell online!
After a trip to the polisher, it received a clear coat to prevent it from tarnishing. We built a powder coated steel cradle that would bolt through the metal frame of the monument. Under the bell-shaped finial is a locking pin that secured the bell to the frame. As you can tell from the photos I kept the bell at my home until we delivered it. Something this shiny draws a lot of attention.
